Molly Bait Considerations.....
The Molly Bait is designed to be fished in a jerkbait or twitch bait type fashion. Most will consider it a crankbait because of the lip and overall appearance. But the style or method of fishing would categorize it as a jerkbait. I consider the bait a finesse bait; meaning the fisherman provides or produces the bait's unique action. There are many different ways to "work it" and all can produce different actions. I'll reference a few techniques below. As far as equipment is concerned, I would recommend a fast action muskie rod with modern superline and a single strand leader.
1) Strait retrieve, on a strait retrieve the bait has a slight wiggle and roll like a classic minnow bait. Those actions exaggerate with speed. The bait doesn't have the resistance and heavy wobble of a traditional crankbait. The concepts behind that are twofold. (1) The bait is easy working with less fatigue and (2) having less lip resistance helps the bait carry its momentum into the twitching and jerking actions.
2) "Long pull", during a strait retrieve or just as the bait enters the water, have your rod in pointing front of you and give it a long fast sweep while reeling. This causes the bait to speed up and increases wiggle, flash, and vibration.
3) "Short quick taps" is a method that that allows the bait to gain slack line which allows it to dart off or kick out. The bait is easy working and doesn't require much effort to get it to kick out perpendicular to the retrieve.
I hope this helps you understand what the bait is about. Try experimenting with double pumps, upwards, downwards, sideways, and other timed twitching. There is no right or wrong way to work the bait.
